Open field

The open field is used in collecting typed data from respondents. E.g free & numeric input and email addresses. Most common use case is to ask for contact details from the respondent.

Element size

By default the element is narrow and shows in the survey form a single line input field. From the element gear menu the element can be set to wide. Wide element shows a multiple line text box in the survey form. From the element gear menu option ‘Settings’ it is possible to change the field from input to text box and vice versa. This means that a narrow element can have a text box and a wide element a single line input field.

Input type

The open field has three different input categories: free input, numeric input and email addresses. The  numeric and email addresses input types check that the respondent doesn’t type unwanted characters etc. Set the input type from the element gear menu option ‘Settings’.

  • Free input: Any characters and numbers allowed and maximum amount of characters can be set. Use this input type if you ask for respondent phone number.
  • Numeric input: min, max, default value and amount of decimals can be set. Removes automatically characters and spaces from the field.
  • Email addresses: Checks that the respondent types a correct email address.

Formatting options

By default the element shows only the title (question) section.

From the element gear menu it is possible to add a descriptive text section. Both can be used at the same time, but only the text section can be removed via the element gear menu.

The title and text section have slightly different editing options. In the title section you can choose the following options for the title text:

  • Formatting: Headers 1 – 3 (Header 3 is the default size and same size as question texts in other question elements)
  • Bold, Italic, Underline and Deleted
  • Alignment: left, center, right and justify

In the text section you can choose the following options for the title text:

  • Bold, Italic, Underline and Deleted
  • Alignment: left, center, right and justify
  • Link (Use this to add links to other webpages etc. to the survey form)

Try this!

Open fields with input type set as email can be used to push the respondents email address to e.g. automations. Use {{email1}} tag in the automation recipients or reply-to field. If you have more than one open field set as email in your survey, you can tag them with {{email2}}, {{email3}} etc tags in the automation.
